File Locations

When Equine Vet Manager is installed to your computer it does so into 2 locations. This basically is split up between the program files and data.

The program files remain static until upgraded and can always be replaced by us. However the data is constantly changing and we have no control over that whatsoever. As such it is your responsibility to make sure that you always backup this information.

One thing that many people forget are images. Whilst the program does backup the underlying data such as clients and horses, when you insert an image into a record, this might be stored in My Pictures or another folder on your computer. In the event of a hard disc failure, assuming backups have been performed and kept on some external media (i.e. CD, flash drive) then the system can be easily restored, but if the photos were not stored in our own program file structures, then these might be lost.

As such we highly recommend that you become accustomed to placing images in locations where we can easily back them up automatically, so that in the event of a failure they are recoverable. Furthermore the software is programmed to look in these folders automatically so storing images here will make insertion of images much easier and faster.

The downside is that this does make your automatic backups larger but equally it is for you to balance safety against convenience.

There are 2 main operating systems being used today that being Windows XP and Windows Vista.

The PROGRAM FILES will always be held in c:\Program Files\Ambrit Software\Equine Vet Manager despite the operating being used. You would normally never need to view these files as they are beyond the users control and should remain untouched. It is these files that are updated when upgrades are applied.

The DATA files are located in what Microsoft call CSIDL folders.

For Windows XP these can be found at C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Documents/Ambrit Software/Equine Vet Manager commonly a subset of Shared Documents

For Windows Vista these can be found at Public/Public Documents/Ambrit Software/Equine Vet Manager.

For Windows 7 these can be found at Users/Public/Public Documents/Ambrit Software/vets Manage.

Note: With Windows Vista and Windows 7 this is one of the few locations you can actually write to. You cannot reliably write to Program Files!
